Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel is the Small Batch given a second maturation in a barrel that was toasted but never charred — Heaven Hill's first new permanent Elijah Craig expression in years when it launched in 2020. Elijah Craig is named for the Baptist preacher credited with charring the first bourbon barrel in 1789, and Heaven Hill is the largest family-owned distillery in Kentucky. Toasted Barrel starts as fully matured Elijah Craig Small Batch — the 78% corn, 10% rye, 12% malted barley mash bill, eight to twelve years in level-4 char oak — then goes into a custom Independent Stave barrel that was toasted low and slow with a light finishing flash-char, for a finish of months rather than years, bottled at 94 proof. Toasting rather than charring caramelizes the wood's sugars without the carbon layer, so the second barrel adds sweetness and baking spice rather than smoke and tannin. Expect the Small Batch's caramel, peanut brittle, and cherry with a layer of toasted marshmallow, graham cracker, vanilla bean, brown butter, and cinnamon, a rounder, sweeter mouthfeel, and a longer, softer finish with a faint char at the end. Honest note: toasted-barrel bourbons are a sweet-tooth style — drinkers who love the Small Batch's dry oak sometimes find this too dessert-like, and drinkers who find the Small Batch sharp love it. For an Old Fashioned that needs no sugar, a bourbon and cigar, or neat after dinner. Toasted, not charred.Buy Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel Bourbon Whiskey online with fast shipping right to your door.
